Cockroaches: which one do you have?

Florida homes see two very different roaches. One lives indoors and spreads through shared plumbing; the other lives outside and wanders in.

01 Side by side

German or American?

Sheet A

German cockroach

The indoor one.

Size
Adults 13–16 mm, about ½ to ⅝ inch.
Look
Light brown or tan with two dark stripes just behind the head. Young ones are darker, almost black, with the same stripes.
Habits
Adults have wings but rarely fly; they run. They hide in tight spaces and ride in on bags and boxes. In apartments they travel between units along shared pipes.

Sheet B

American cockroach

The big one from outside.

Size
Adults can be slightly more than 50 mm, about 2 inches.
Look
Reddish brown to mahogany, with a yellow band outlining the area behind the head.
Habits
Prefers warmth above 70°F with food and water nearby. Lives in wood piles, dead logs and hollow trees; indoors, usually in crawl spaces. Egg cases hold about 16 eggs.

02 Lasting control

It usually takes a professional.

Especially with American cockroaches. Treatment works best alongside a few changes at home.

  • Tighten up sanitation and garbage storage.01
  • Don’t leave food out.02
  • Seal entry points and clear debris around the property.03
  • Glue traps help you see where they’re moving.04
